Controls Engineer I
BEUMER Group is an international leader in intralogistics, specializing in various automation technologies. As a Controls Engineer I, you will support high-speed sorter systems by programming machine controls, collaborating with engineering teams, and ensuring system functionality through testing and troubleshooting.
Responsibilities
- Understand customer requirements and translate them into control system solutions and programmatic designs
- Design and program machine controls for all types of BEUMER sorters, palletizers, and Stretch Hood machines using BEUMER standard machine control code
- Design and program operator panels and HMI systems
- Assist in PLC programming and utilize AI copilots to generate, refine, and optimize PLC logic structures, code efficiency, readability, and documentation
- Prepare and test PLC hardware, I/O systems, networks, and machine control systems for projects
- Understand and interpret electrical design drawings, control schematics, and specifications as they relate to machine control programming
- Work with Electrical Engineering to define I/O networks, addressing, and system architecture
- Work with engineering teams in the selection, integration, and testing of peripheral equipment and with PC software developers on system interfaces
- Apply AI tools to analyze logs, alarms, and system behavior to accelerate troubleshooting and root cause analysis
- Participate in in-house machine control testing, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), and system validation at BEUMER facilities
- Participate in on-site machine control commissioning, troubleshooting, and support of field teams
- Support the development of standardized PLC libraries, reusable code modules, AI-assisted documentation, and engineering workflows
- Automate repetitive engineering tasks, including I/O validation, tag mapping, and test script generation
- Prepare project documentation and as-built documentation for every project
- Participate in the second-tier software response line and support resolution of system issues
- Work with subcontractors in the controls and electrical areas, specifying scope and deliverables and supervising the correct and timely delivery
- Collaborate with senior engineers to implement practical and safe AI applications in controls engineering
- Participate in special projects and continuous improvement initiatives as assigned
Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Controls, Automation, or related field
- 0–2 years experience (internships/co-ops welcome)
- Basic understanding of PLC programming (Siemens or Allen-Bradley preferred)
- Basic understanding of Industrial automation systems
- Basic understanding of Electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Effective communication and teamwork
- Experience or interest in AI tools (ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, etc.)
- Experience or interest in Python, scripting, or data analysis
- Exposure to SCADA systems (Ignition, FactoryTalk)
- Exposure to Industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Profinet)
- Passion for applying AI to industrial automation
