Position Overview

arenaflex is hiring a Senior Data Scientist to join our Analytics and Insights division. This is a full-time, remote-eligible position based in or near Austin, USA, with a competitive hourly rate of $27.00 per hour. In this role, you will partner closely with cross-functional teams of engineers, product managers, designers, and business strategists to uncover insights, build predictive models, and influence the direction of our most important products. You will bring scientific rigor, statistical depth, and creative problem-solving to challenges that span product creation, development, experimentation, and long-term optimization.

As a Senior Data Scientist at arenaflex, you will not simply generate dashboards or produce reports. You will shape the questions that get asked, design the frameworks that answer them, and ensure that the answers translate into meaningful improvements in the products our users love. From foundational search and discovery experiences to content platforms, recommendation systems, advertising products, and developer tools, the scope of problems you will engage with is both broad and deeply consequential.

Key Responsibilities

• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work shoulder-to-shoulder with product managers, engineers, designers, and business stakeholders in cross-project initiatives to identify, clarify, and prioritize the most important business and product questions that need answering.
• Problem Translation: Translate ambiguous business challenges into well-defined analytical questions, measurable evaluation metrics, predictive models, and clear experimental designs. Provide thoughtful feedback to refine and scope these questions.
• Custom Data Infrastructure: Design and build custom data pipelines, analytical frameworks, or extend existing data infrastructure to support both one-off investigations and ongoing monitoring of product health.
• Statistical Modeling: Plan, develop, and evaluate models that mathematically express and solve defined problems, including cases where precedent is limited and creativity is essential.
• Data Engineering & Quality: Independently gather, extract, and consolidate data from multiple sources using tools such as SQL, R, and Python. Clean, restructure, and validate datasets to ensure they meet the highest standards of quality before analysis.
• Insight Generation: Conduct deep exploratory analysis, formulate hypotheses, and produce actionable insights that influence product roadmaps and strategic decisions.
• Experimentation: Design, run, and analyze A/B tests and other experiments to measure the impact of product changes and feature rollouts.
• Communication: Present findings, recommendations, and trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences through clear written reports, compelling visualizations, and engaging presentations.
• Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior analysts and data scientists, helping to elevate the analytical maturity of the broader team.

Essential Qualifications

• A Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Physics, or a related discipline.
• At least 1 year of professional work experience using analytics to solve product or business problems, OR 3 years of work experience combined with a PhD in a relevant field.
• Strong hands-on coding skills in Python, R, or SQL for data extraction, transformation, and analysis.
• Demonstrated experience querying relational databases, working with large datasets, and applying statistical analysis techniques to real-world problems.
• Solid understanding of experimental design, hypothesis testing, and causal inference.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex findings into clear, actionable narratives.

Preferred Qualifications

• At least 3 years of professional work experience using analytics to solve product or business problems, OR 6 years of work experience combined with a PhD in a relevant field.
• Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Statistics, Machine Learning, Computer Science, or a closely related quantitative discipline.
• Deep expertise in machine learning algorithms, including supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning techniques.
• Experience working with big data technologies such as Spark, Hadoop, BigQuery, or similar platforms.
• Track record of influencing product strategy and roadmap decisions through data-driven insights.
• Experience designing and analyzing large-scale experiments in a consumer or enterprise product environment.
• Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Looker, or similar platforms.
