Our mission is to inspire the world by providing limitless entertainment, and we achieve that by investing heavily in cutting‑edge technology, data‑driven decision making, and a culture that celebrates curiosity, collaboration, and continuous learning.

Role Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Distributed Systems Engineer (L4) – Data Platform to join our remote‑first data engineering organization. In this role, you will design, build, and operate the next generation of distributed data infrastructure that powers arenaflex’s recommendation engines, content delivery pipelines, analytics, and emerging interactive experiences. You will work closely with product managers, data scientists, and fellow engineers to translate ambitious business goals into robust, scalable, and secure data solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect and implement highly available, low‑latency data services that support millions of concurrent requests across the arenaflex ecosystem.
  • Design and maintain distributed storage and query layers (e.g., columnar stores, key‑value caches, and real‑time analytics engines) that enable sub‑millisecond data access for micro‑services.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to define data models, APIs, and service contracts that align with product roadmaps and performance SLAs.
  • Drive the adoption of open‑source technologies, contribute to arenaflex’s internal OSS projects, and actively participate in the broader open‑source community.
  • Lead performance tuning, capacity planning, and reliability engineering initiatives to ensure the platform scales to petabyte‑scale workloads.
  • Mentor junior engineers, conduct code reviews, and champion best practices in distributed systems design, testing, and documentation.
  • Implement robust monitoring, alerting, and observability pipelines to proactively detect and resolve issues before they impact customers.
  • Partner with security and compliance teams to embed data protection, encryption, and auditability into every layer of the platform.

Essential Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of hands‑on experience building large‑scale distributed systems or data platforms.
  • Programming Proficiency: Strong command of Java and at least one additional language such as Python, Go, or Scala.
  • System Design: Demonstrated ability to design fault‑tolerant, horizontally scalable services that meet strict latency and throughput requirements.
  • Data Technologies: Practical experience with distributed storage solutions (e.g., Cassandra, DynamoDB, HBase) and query engines (e.g., Presto/Trino, Druid, Iceberg).
  • Cloud Platforms: Familiarity with cloud‑native services and infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) for building and operating data pipelines.
  • Collaboration: Proven track record of working effectively with product owners, data scientists, and operations teams in a fast‑paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or advanced coursework in distributed systems, data engineering, or related fields.
  • Experience with real‑time streaming frameworks such as Apache Flink, Kafka Streams, or Spark Structured Streaming.
  • Contributions to open‑source projects or a public GitHub portfolio showcasing complex system implementations.
  • Knowledge of container orchestration (Kubernetes) and infrastructure‑as‑code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation).
  • Familiarity with machine‑learning pipelines and feature stores, enabling seamless integration of data for AI workloads.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to break down ambiguous business problems into concrete technical solutions.
  • Problem Solving: Comfort tackling “hard” problems at scale, such as latency optimization, data consistency, and fault isolation.
  • Communication: Clear articulation of complex concepts to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Ownership: Proactive mindset with a willingness to take end‑to‑end responsibility for services you build.
  • Adaptability: Thrive in a remote‑first environment, managing time zones, and collaborating across distributed teams.
  • Continuous Learning: Passion for staying current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices.

Career Growth & Learning Opportunities

At arenaflex, your career trajectory is shaped by the impact you create. As a Distributed Systems Engineer, you will have access to:

  • Mentorship from senior architects who have built world‑class data platforms for billions of users.
  • Internal technical conferences, hackathons, and “Lunch & Learn” sessions focused on distributed computing, cloud architecture, and data science.
  • Funding for certifications, conferences, and advanced coursework to deepen expertise in areas such as Kubernetes, data security, or machine learning infrastructure.
  • Clear promotion pathways from L4 to senior and principal engineering roles, with transparent performance metrics tied to business outcomes.
  • Opportunities to lead cross‑functional initiatives, influence product strategy, and shape the future of arenaflex’s data ecosystem.

Work Environment & Culture

arenaflex embraces a remote‑first culture that values flexibility, autonomy, and work‑life balance. Our engineers enjoy:

  • Fully distributed teams with flexible hours, allowing you to work from any location within the United States.
  • A collaborative Slack community, virtual coffee chats, and quarterly in‑person meet‑ups to foster connection.
  • A culture of psychological safety where ideas are judged on merit, and diverse perspectives are celebrated.
  • Commitment to inclusive hiring practices, ensuring a workplace where every voice is heard and respected.
  • State‑of‑the‑art development environments, including cloud‑based IDEs, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing frameworks.

Compensation & Benefits

arenaflex offers a competitive compensation package that reflects the expertise you bring to the role. While the base rate for this position is $28 per hour, total rewards include:

  • Performance‑based bonuses tied to individual and team achievements.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage for you and your dependents.
