About the position The GIS Specialist is an early career position that supports the GIS team by preparing and managing spatial datasets, performing analysis, and producing clear, publication-quality maps and figures for a range of projects. This role works closely with GIS staff and operations under the guidance of a GIS Lead to ensure deliverables meet project standards, timelines, and client expectations. The position requires strong attention to detail, consistency in following established workflows, and the ability to contribute to efficient, high-volume production environments. The ideal candidate will have a foundation in GIS and CRM with high potential for growth.

Responsibilities

  • Comprehensive utilization of ESRI ArcGIS Pro 3.6, ArcGIS Enterprise, Codifi, and ESRI Field Maps.
  • Prepare and revise cartographic products, including map figures for clients and final reports.
  • Conduct spatial analysis with ESRI and in-house tools.
  • Prepare and revise field data collection products, such as WebMaps, tailored to meet specific projects goals.
  • Create, manipulate, and export various data types and sources (KML, Shapefile, Feature Dataset, WFL, and JSON).
  • Organize spatial data with geodatabases, feature datasets, and ArcGIS Enterprise groups and hosted feature services.
  • Georeference and digitize raster images, including construction documents, survey plats, and historical aerials.
  • Execute Site File Search research, including retrieval of State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) data and researching historical resources when applicable.
  • Adhere to agency-specific requirements and Chronicle Heritage branding guidelines.
  • Provide basic support for field data collection applications (e.g., Codifi and ArcGIS Field Map).
  • Engage in weekly meetings with GIS Team for new announcements and workflow demonstrations.
  • Provide GIS colleagues with peer review and quality assurance feedback on cartographic products and data standards.
  • Troubleshoot spatial data collection application problems or other minor IT issues directly related to the GIS Team’s work products.
  • Support team production KPIs.

Requirements

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in GIS, geography, anthropology/archaeology, or related discipline.
  • Minimum one year of experience with ArcGIS Pro (version 3.1 or higher) including proficiency with geoprocessing tools, geodatabases, and comfort with advanced data processing workflows.
  • Minimum of one year working with ArcGIS Enterprise or Online.
  • Familiarity with field data collection tools such as ArcGIS Field Maps.
  • Working knowledge of Windows systems, including basic troubleshooting.
  • Basic familiarity with cultural resource management practices and fieldwork.
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting cultural resource data from reports, maps, and imagery.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Problem-solving mindset with the ability to adapt quickly.
  • Strong organizational skills with experience managing complex sets of files and data efficiently.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to prioritize efficiency over perfection.
  • Consistently takes initiative and adds value to the team.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet last-minute deadlines.
  • Able to adapt to changing project needs and priorities.
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and staying current with industry practices.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with ArcGIS Enterprise, including Portal projects, Enterprise geodatabases, and branch versioning.
  • Familiarity with additional geospatial technologies such as photogrammetry, remote sensing, LiDAR, and GNSS/GPS receivers.
  • Experience operating drones for data collection.
  • Working knowledge of QGIS.
  • Basic proficiency in Python for GIS workflows.
  • Field experience related to archaeology, such as mapping, data recording, site photography, sketching, survey, or data recovery.
  • Experience working with CAD software.
  • General familiarity with emerging technologies, including AI.
