Job Title: Epidemiologist (ELR Specialist) Client: Tennessee Department of Health Division: Communicable and Environmental Disease and Emergency Preparedness (CEDEP) Program: Surveillance Systems and Informatics (SSI) Position Overview The Tennessee Department of Health is seeking an Epidemiologist (ELR Specialist) to support communicable disease informatics initiatives within the SSI Program. This role focuses on Electronic Lab Reporting (ELR), data systems integration, and public health surveillance tools. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience with interoperability standards such as HL7 and platforms like REDCap, while contributing to large-scale public health data systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support ELR onboarding using HL7 2.5.1 standards
  • Monitor production systems, including alerts, dashboards, and issue tracking
  • Investigate ELR processing issues and recommend solutions
  • Collaborate with developers using Rhapsody Integration Engine to enhance or build data routes
  • Process laboratory data from alternate formats (e.g., flat files)
  • Manage interoperability vocabularies within surveillance systems (e.g., LOINC mapping)
  • Serve as liaison between ELR systems and downstream public health users
  • Support maintenance activities such as validation, error resolution, and code assignments

Required / Desired Qualifications

  • 1–3 years of experience in ELR onboarding and/or maintenance (state or local health department preferred)
  • Experience working with or supporting Rhapsody integration workflows
  • Proficiency in statistical/analytical programming (SAS, SQL, or R)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to manage projects and work cross-functionally

Preferred Experience

  • Public health informatics or disease surveillance systems
  • Data standards and interoperability (HL7, LOINC)
  • Exposure to system integration and health data exchange
